Program Details
The Surgical Technologist program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. It’s comprised of online coursework, in-person labs, and 360 hours of clinical practicum
experience.
Experience
As a part of this program, you will complete a 360-hour and 120-case total clinical
practicum in a surgery center located in Oregon. This work experience is essentially
an extended job interview; you are expected to behave professionally and responsibly
in the clinical setting. In addition, this experience is an excellent way to begin
networking in the medical community.
The clinical portion of this program takes place during the final two terms of the
program. You must maintain a C average or better in all classes in order to remain
eligible for clinical practicum. In order to graduate, you must complete a minimum
of 360 hours of practicum and a minimum of 120 cases at a healthcare facility in Oregon.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate competence in the technological aspects of the surgical technologist profession.
- Provide surgical patient care and comfort with empathy and cultural competence.
- Demonstrate competence in surgical technologist duties, procedures and cases.
- Demonstrate effective communication with patients, family members, and colleagues
using verbal, written, and information technology tools/devices.
Credit for Prior Learning
If you are currently a certified surgical technologist, LBCC offers a credit for prior
learning option to obtain an associate degree. Follow the steps below to get started.
Step 1: Submit Your Credentials for Surgical Technology
Visit Credit for Prior Learning for instructions on how to upload your credentials (under "Credit for Prior Learning
Options," select "Credit for Professional Licensure or Certification" and then "Surgical
Technology."
Step 2: Apply to LBCC
Submit the New Student Application. Once you have applied, you will be sent instructions to submit any transcripts you
have from previous institutions. You will also receive instructions on how to complete
a new student orientation and meet with an academic advisor.
Step 3: Complete Remaining Coursework
Complete the following courses to obtain your associate degree:
- MTH 075: Variables & Linear Equations (4 credits) or higher
- WR 121Z: Composition I (4 credits)
- BI 231: Human Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)
- BI 232: Human Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)
- BI 233: Human Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)

- CRS 130: Medical Terminology (3 credits)
- PSY 201Z: Introduction to Psychology I (4 credits)
