Academic Standing Policy
LBCC calculates Academic Standing (AS) for all degree-seeking students who are registered for credit classes each term as of the beginning of the third week of that term. Academic Standing is calculated as soon as grades are in for the given term, typically the middle of the week following finals week.
There are two items that are considered in calculating a student's Academic Standing:
- Cumulative (Overall) GPA - cumulative GPA must be 2.00 or greater to remain in good Academic Standing.
- Term GPA - term GPA must be 2.00 or greater to remain in good Academic Standing.
If a degree-seeking student does not comply with one or both of the two conditions above during a given term where they are enrolled in credit classes, they are placed on probation. Students may be placed on probation for two terms; after the third term of not meeting the minimums of both conditions above, a student will be placed on a one-term suspension. If a student appeals this suspension, enrolls in credit courses, and once again does not meet the minimums for both conditions above, they will then be placed on a one-year suspension.
To refer to the official Administrative Rule, please see AR 4020-11 in our Administrative Rules and Board Policies.
Note: LBCC Academic Standing requirements are not exactly the same as those required by Financial Aid. For information on Financial Aid academic standing (formally known as Satisfactory Academic Progress), please go here: LBCC Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
Academic Standing Flow Chart
YOUR ACADEMIC STANDING | WHAT IT MEANS |
Good Standing | Student has 2.0 GPA for both the term and cumulatively. |
First Term Probation | Student is in one or both of the following circumstances for the first time: 1. Their term GPA is lower than 2.0 2. Their cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 |
Second Term Probation | Student is in one or both of the following circumstances for the second time: 1. Their term GPA is lower than 2.0 2. Their cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 |
Suspension for one term | If the student falls under one or both of the above circumstances for the third time, the student is then placed on a one term suspension and may not enroll for the next consecutive term. If the student wishes, they may complete an appeal requesting permission to enroll for the next consecutive term. If their appeal is approved, the student is placed on Third Term Probation (see next row.) NOTE: Even if the student sits out a term, they still must complete an appeal when they are ready to return for their next term. |
Third Term Probation | Student has successfully appealed to return for next consecutive term after having
been placed on suspension for that term. NOTE: If the student falls under one or both of the two previously stated circumstances at the end of this term, they will then move to "Suspended" status (see next row.) |
Suspended | Student again falls under one or both of the two previously stated circumstances; student must sit out one year and then appeal to return. |
* NOTE: Academic Standing is only calculated for degree-seeking students and only during
terms where such students are enrolled in credit courses.
If at any time a degree-seeking student is on probation and enrolls in credit courses
and achieves a GPA of 2.0 or greater for both the term and cumulatively, then their
status will be reset to "Good Standing".
Appeal forms related to academic standing must be completed electronically.
