Transparency in Learning and Teaching
Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) is a method of assignment design which
advocates for clear statements on assignment instructions, clarifying for students
exactly why they are being asked to complete a particular task. By making the learning
outcomes explicit, and connecting the assignment to particular learning outcome(s),
students better understand what they’re learning and why they’re learning it.
How to implement it
It’s important to clearly state, preferably on the assignment sheet itself, the assignment’s purpose, task, and criteria:
- Purpose: Why is an instructor asking students to complete this task? How will students benefit from completing this assignment? For instance, an assignment for an essay begins with “After completing this assignment, you will understand how to…” or an assignment sheet describing a lab report begins with, “This assignment asks you to focus on your skills of…."
- Task: Clearly stating the steps of the project, usually in bullet form for easy reading,
helps guide the students through the assignment task.
- Criteria: How will a student be critiqued in order to determine successful completion of the assignment? Is this assignment graded on completion or are there specific factors the instructor is looking for? By stating this explicitly on the assignment sheet itself, students will understand where to focus their efforts.
