Guided Pathways
Providing clarity, equity and support for every student
WHAT IS GUIDED PATHWAYS?
Guided Pathways is an effort to provide students with clear, coherent education maps that include course sequences, progress milestones, and learning outcomes for any program of study. Guided Pathways assists students in understanding the steps they need to take to graduate with a degree or certificate at LBCC.
In addition, it also connects students to resources and advisors at key points along the way so no student is left without help when planning their education.
LBCC has joined 30 other initial colleges selected to participate in the Pathways Project led by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
Guided Pathways focuses on four main goals in order to boost student success and completion rates:
With these four pillars, LBCC will help students locate the right academic pathways for their situations, help them plan their academic careers from start to finish, and connect them to advisors and ambassadors along the way so they are supported in their education choices.

META MAJORS
As part of Guided Pathways, LBCC has placed all college academic degrees and certificate programs into seven different Meta Majors - or umbrella categories - so each certificate or degree program fits under a large, overall heading.
With these Meta Majors, LBCC can implement things like common first terms for students in the same major.
LBCC uses the following seven Meta Majors:

PROGRAM MAPS
A key element to Guided Pathways is providing students with coherent educational plans. LBCC has created term guides and plans for every degree and certificate at LBCC so students can enter into their major and follow these maps from start to finish.
Each map includes check-ins with advisors and opportunities such as when to apply to Oregon State University for transfer degrees as well as the relative degree of math and writing needed for each pathway.
See our Area of Study page for more information.
PROJECT TIMELINE
Summer 2012: Achieving the Dream Kickoff Institute
Achieving the Dream was an institutional effort to make student intervention decisions
based on data. This project exposed LBCC to data-driven decision making and proved
to be a natural lead-in to Guided Pathways due to the nature of using data as a way
to guide students and an interest in exploring ways to boost student success rates.
Fall 2013: Advanced Learning Placement Courses Offered
Winter 2014: Achieving the Dream Presentations
LBCC presented to consortium of rural Oregon Achieving the Dream schools.
Winter 2015: Achieving the Dream Presentations
LBCC presented at DREAM Conference in Baltimore, MD.
Summer 2015: New Student Center Created
The New Student Center at LBCC was created in order to guide students into their first
term by providing academic planning opportunities and making sure students chose a
meta and/or major. The New Student Center also provides opportunity for students to
take placement testing in Math and Writing to ensure that they meet developmental
education requirements. The New Student Center helps students choose and enter an
academic pathway.
Fall 2015: LBCC Joins AACC Guided Pathways Project
Winter 2016: AACC Institute 1
LBCC attended the Guided Pathways Institute Leadership for Transformational Change:
Implementing Pathways at Scale.
Spring 2016: AACC Institute 2
LBCC attended the Guided Pathways Institute Pathway Design I – Mapping Pathways through
the Institution.
Fall 2016: Math Dev Ed Redesign
Fall 2016: Updated Program Learning Outcomes
Fall 2016: Program Maps - First Draft
The Guided Pathways team worked with deans and faculty to create program maps that
would give students a clear guide to which courses to complete and when in order to
satisfy the requirements of their major and graduate on time. These program maps provide
detailed course progressions that students can follow during their time at LBCC. This
step clarifies the pathways a student can take to complete their degree or certificate.
Fall 2016: AACC Institute 3
LBCC attended the Guided Pathways Institute Redesigning Student Intake Systems and
Ongoing Academic and Non-Academic Supports.
Fall 2016: Program Learning Outcomes Updated
Fall 2016: Advising Center Established
Fall 2016: Faculty Assess Student Learning
Winter 2017: Center for Learning Innovation Re-Established
The Center for Learning Innovation was re-established in order to guide teachers and
educate them on better teaching practices. Better teaching practices implemented in
the classroom helps ensure that students are learning in their academic pathway.
Winter 2017: AACC Institute 4
LBCC attended the Guided Pathways Institute Ensuring Students are Learning and Progressing
along the Pathway.
Spring 2017: Demographics
The Office of Data and Decision Support (Institutional Research) provided faculty
with general demographics information on their incoming students so that faculty could
better serve their student populations.
Summer 2017: Second Draft of Program Maps
Summer 2017: Meta Areas Created
LBCC faculty and deans worked to sort all LBCC majors into seven meta areas. These
meta areas help to clarify and sort academic pathways for students.
Summer 2017: Meta Advisors Assigned
Summer 2017: AACC Institute 5
LBCC attends the Guided Pathways Institute Pathway Design II: Pathways to Transfer
and Employment.
Fall 2017: AACC Institute 6
LBCC attended the Guided Pathways Institute Policy Meets Pathways: Governing Board
Roles and Policy Change.
Summer 2018: Advisors Assigned for Every Student
Communication plans are also established between student and advisor.
Fall 2018: DegreeWorks Implemented
DegreeWorks, a degree planning software, is implemented for all of the college. Advisors
use DegreeWorks to help with academic planning for students such that students stay
on their academic pathways.
Fall 2018: Version 2.0 of Program Maps Launched
Version 2.0 of maps includes a list view function based on student feedback.
