May 2016

The college has completed the purchase of the property at 931 NW Reiman St. for expansion of the Benton Center. The project will add 20,000 square feet of instruction spaces and more than double parking to more than 250 spaces to help address shortages in both areas that restrict offerings at the center. The new property is located just north of the center.

The specific timeline for the project to begin depends on finding an acceptable new location for the Corvallis operation of First Student, Inc. The company, which provides school bus transportation for school districts throughout the United States including Corvallis, is currently leasing the property.

A small portion of the property is currently available, so some additional parking may be added in the coming months.

The Benton Center project steering committee, which includes community members and college staff, will meet over the summer to further develop plans.

January 2016

The LBCC Board of Education approved a $3 million sale agreement for property to add 20,000 square feet of additional classroom space and increase parking to meet current and future demand at the Benton Center.

The property, at 931 NW Reiman St., includes about two-and-a-half acres and a 12,000-square-foot building. The land is currently leased by school transportation company First Student, which uses it for parking and maintenance of school buses.

Contingencies of the deal include working with First Student to find an acceptable place to relocate their operation, and for LBCC to work with the City of Corvallis to determine possible zoning issues. If either of those issues are insurmountable, the sale could be canceled. The college estimates that it will be able to more than double parking at the Benton Center with the new property. The existing building also provides new options for expansion of classroom space.

December 2015

The LBCC Building Committee is currently working on five parking options for the Benton Center project.

November 2015

At the invitation of the Corvallis City Council, the LBCC Building Committee presented parking options at city's council meeting held Nov. 2. LBCC's committee is currently compiling additional information to address the Benton Center parking needs.

October 2015

The college is continuing to explore options for additional parking for the center. Programmatic design is underway with FFA Architecture and Interiors.

From LBCC President Greg Hamann:
"We at LBCC are committed to developing the best possible project for the Benton Center, maximizing our capacity to serve the needs of Corvallis and its citizens, providing expanded classrooms and parking within the parameters of the Bond passed by the voters and the land available to us. While we would be eager to pursue any opportunities that deeper LBCC-Corvallis collaborations may afford us, we are not currently pursuing the acquisition of Washington Park and would not do so in the future unless that were something the citizens and city of Corvallis would offer to us for our consideration."

July 2015

Negotiations continue with Samaritan Health for the purchase of the parking structure. Design meetings have begun with FFA Architecture and Interiors for the project, and programmatic design is underway.

May 2015

The programmatic design phase is set to start by the end of May. The four phases of design include programmatic, schematic, design development, and construction drawing. The college is still in negotiations with Good Samaritan Hospital to purchase a portion of the parking garage that they plan to build.

March 2015

The college is currently in negotiations with Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis to purchase a portion of the parking garage that the hospital plans to build.
