  • Why Should You Go into CADD?

    The two-year Computer Aided Design and Drafting program is a technical curriculum designed to assist students in acquiring basic attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary to successfully enter drafting occupations. The first year of study provides a sound general background, while the second year provides more specific coverage of major occupational areas, such as civil, mechanical, electronic, architectural and technical illustration.

    All CADD students planning to complete the program within a two-year period are advised, as minimal requirements, should have a ninth-grade reading level and be prepared to register for MTH95. Mathematics are important in this program. Students are required to complete MTH111 College Algebra, as well as several engineering courses that require math skills. Students may take general education courses at night, but most technical courses are offered only during the day. Students may attend on a part-time basis or start in the fall with little difficulty. Students starting winter, spring or summer terms may encounter some difficulty in scheduling sequence courses with prerequisites. Many of the technical courses must be taken in a sequential order beginning fall term.

    Classes are held in well-equipped classrooms and laboratories. Computer Aided Drafting workstations are used in all courses. Current industry-standard versions of Autodesk series software and Solidworks are used in engineering graphics classes.

    The lab is outfitted with multiple 3D rapid prototyping printers. Printers take an STL file of a 3D solid model and will print the model as a solid object. If we can imagine it, we can build it. The process is additive, adding layer upon layer of material to make a part. Typical print times are a couple hours. The printers are used to simulate a manufacturing experience in class, design through production. Students use the 3D printers to make anything from hanging Christmas decorations to robots.

We were given 3d isometric drawings with dimensions and had to make front, top, and right drawings of everything (just like you had us do in class).   • American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians (ASCET)

    What is ASCET

    American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians. This is the only national, profession society created for engineering technicians and technologies in all engineering disciplines.

    Employment Referral

    A magazine CET lists in most issues members seeking employment and potential employers.

    Financial Aid

    ASCET offers the Joseph M. Parish and the Joseph C. Johnson memorial grants of $500 and $750. Small cash grants are also available.

    How to Join

    Contact any of the club officers or staff of the LBCC Computer Aided Design and Drafting department. They will have more information about scheduled events. There is a membership fee of $8 that is waived making ASCET free to join.

  • SolidWorks

    Students learn the fundamentals of parametric solids through advanced modeling of features, lofts and extrusions. Students further progress into advance assemblies, drawing creation, stress analysis, animation and more.

    Teamwork is key in the work environment and students are broken up into groups to create solutions to engineering problems. Teams simulate the work environment from design, documentation and production of parts through finished assemblies and products.

    It's not all hard work, though, as team projects include: Pinewood Derby specification cars that are raced; HO scale train bridges that are load tested; desktop trebuchets; and other projects depending on the term. The program culminates in a 10-week remote controlled robotic project. Student-designed robots compete in friendly games. All team projects are produced using state of the art 3D printing and Rapid Prototyping equipment.

    AutoCAD

    There are two options for AutoCAD at LBCC. The first is a single class that covers the basics of what AutoCAD is: Introduction to CAD. This class is offered fall and spring terms at night and everyone is welcome to attend. Sign up early as this class fills quickly. The second AutoCAD option is the degree option for CADD.

    Students working towards the degree begin with a basic hand drafting class as well as an AutoCAD class. Learning the basics of what a drawing is and what good presentation should look like should not have technology get in the way, so we have an old fashioned drafting class. This class goes hand-in-hand with the CAD I class where the basics of AutoCAD are taught and the drafting is applied to the computer environment. Professional drawing presentation to industry standards is fully covered as well as effective and efficient use of AutoCAD.

    We begin with simple single view drawings and progress into advanced single part drawings, assemblies, Paper Space, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and conclude in 3D AutoCAD. We use AutoCAD in multiple disciplines including mechanical, architecture, civil, structural, and electrical drawings as well as customizing the AutoCAD environment for better productivity.
