  • Why Should You Get a Degree in Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology?

    Diesel technicians repair and maintain the diesel engines that power trains, ships, generators, and the equipment used in highway construction, logging, and farming. Technicians also maintain and repair power train, electrical, and hydraulic systems used in construction equipment, farm equipment, and trucks. Some technicians work for companies that maintain their own vehicles; in these jobs, technicians spend most of their time doing tasks that will help prevent future problems.

    Graduates can also pursue opportunities in service departments of distributors and dealers, bus lines/railways, trucking and marine industries, schools, electric power plants, local industries and state and federal government departments.

    Our program is conducted in modern, well-equipped classrooms and laboratories/shops. The 25,000 square-foot Heavy Equipment Mechanics/Diesel facility houses a dynamometer and heavy-duty engine rebuilding lab. Students get a balance of theory and practical experience gained by diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and rebuilding components and live equipment.

    Student Sponsorship Programs:

    Industry partner companies have programs internal to their organizations designed to sponsor students enrolled in the Heavy Equipment/Diesel program. Students apply directly to the company, and if accepted, the company provides financial support to the student while progressing through the program. The student in return agrees to work for the sponsoring company during school breaks, and continue on as an employee after graduation. The specific sponsorship program details vary according to the company.

  • Cooperative Work Experience

    Student Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) Requirement: Students enrolled in the Heavy Equipment/Diesel and Construction and Forestry programs are required to perform Student Cooperative Work Experience (CWE). This is a class where the jobsite is the actual classroom, and the business supervisor is the instructor. The LBCC CWE Coordinator is a facilitator that works to ensure there is a continuity of efforts between the student; the business; and LBCC to complete the CWE requirements.

    Currently a student is required to perform 8 credit hours of CWE to meet the minimum degree requirements. One credit hour is awarded for each satisfactorily completed 30 hours of work performed at a CWE employer’s jobsite.

  • John Deere Construction and Forestry Program

    John Deere Construction and Forestry Program: LBCC is one of seven colleges in the entire Unites States of America with a John Deere Construction and Forestry Technician program. The Construction and Forestry Technology Program is a two-year program leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree. This program develops the technical competency and professional attributes of students to prepare graduates for high-paying and rewarding careers as a John Deere construction and forestry equipment technicians.

    At this time there are two John Deere companies sending students to LBCC for the JD C&F Technician program:

    Students interested in a career as a John Deere C&F Technician should contact their local John Deere Construction and Forestry dealership and speak with that dealership’s Service Manager. Application may also be initiated by:

  • Tool Information

    Students will use Snap-On Tools that are supplied by LBCC at the Advanced Transportation Technology Center (ATTC) during their training. All students entering the program will be assessed a $1350 tool fee per term during the first year of the program: 3 terms, for a total of $4050. Upon successful completion of all first-year program classes with a grade of C or better, students will be awarded the Diesel Student Tool set.

    LBCC HE/Diesel students may purchase additional Snap-On tools with a student discount through Bill Overall, the Snap-On account representative for the ATTC (contact information is below).

    Students who fail or drop out of the program will be awarded a partial tool voucher for each tool course fee that has been assessed and collected by Linn-Benton Community College. To qualify for a partial tool voucher, the student must make arrangements with the Diesel instructor staff at the ATTC within one (1) term of taking their last Diesel class. In cases of EXTREME hardship, a partial tool cash refund can be considered through a petition process that can be initiated through the Admissions Office in Takena Hall at the Albany campus.

John Alvin is an instructor, co-chair in the Heavy Equipment Diesel program at Linn Benton community college. John has a twenty two year history as an instructor, student and graduate of both the Diesel and the Auto technology programs from the same institution. John participates regular in factory training through John Deere, Kenworth, Bendix, and others.

Barry applied for, and attained his current job position as an instructor in the Heavy Equipment/Diesel Department at LBCC in 2014. In very short order, he was assigned the duties of Cooperative Work Experience Coordinator and Student Advisor. He is now the Department Co-Chair; and teaches “Electrical and Electronic Systems” and “Steering, Suspension, and Brakes” to the first year students in the program.

I graduated from LBCC with degrees in both Automotive and HE Diesel Mechanics. LBCC HE Diesel, It’s a lot of work to build my own course syllabus, but the pleasure of working with great LBCC students has some color and thickness returning to my hair.
