Absences and Substitute Teaching

Absences and Substitute Teaching

If you know in advance that you are going to be absent from a class you are scheduled to teach, you need to get approval from your Department Chair. You will also need to let the Division Admin know that you’re going to be absent through email and if necessary you will need to turn in a time sheet with to use sick leave for your absence. You and your Department Chair can discuss whether or not you need to find a substitute for the class, or if it would be more appropriate to assign work ahead of time in lieu of class attendance. If a substitute is necessary, your Department Chair can assist you in finding one. If you are going to be absent during an exam, you need to let the Dean’s office know so that an appropriate proctor can be found.

If you are sick or have an emergency and need to cancel class, you need to call either your Department Chair, or the Division Admin ASAP so they can let students know class is cancelled. You must speak to someone! Don’t just leave a message. If you use Moodle for your class, you can put out an assignment in your Moodle shell, or let either your Department Chair or Admin know to notify the students of an assignment in lieu of class. After your absence you will need to turn in a timesheet reflecting the hours you missed to the Division Admin.
