The Role of the Department Chair

Department chairs at Linn-Benton are in charge of the administrative details of running the department. They also review applications to select our part-time faculty. However, our department chairs do not choose hires and are not asked to formally appraise or supervise part-time faculty. Your supervisor is your dean. The department chair, however, can serve as a resource for everyday issues with your teaching, and you should go to your department chair first with any problems or questions. They may also ask you to participate in departmental efforts to assess student learning outcomes, or to implement an assignment or test common across all sections of the course you are teaching.

The department chair is responsible for reviewing and collecting your syllabi each term. They are also responsible for communication to the department and will include part time faculty in such communication. If you feel you aren't receiving department emails/communication, please contact your department chair.

While approval for professional development events happens with the supervisor, professional development committee, and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development, your department chair can help recommend and find appropriate activities.
