When a student comes to a Dean with a complaint about a faculty member (whether full- or part- time), we listen to the student and take their complaint seriously. Often, the student simply requires some coaching about how to succeed in the class (e.g. go to office hours, purchase the book) or how to interpret the instructor’s expectations. Sometimes it becomes clear that the student would benefit from meeting with the instructor privately (with or without the Dean) to clear up a misunderstanding or to agree on a solution to the problem. In these cases, we will get in touch with you to let you know that the student has a complaint and will be coming to see you (or that we need to arrange a meeting together). In other cases, when we hear a common theme in student complaints over time, we will talk with you about the problem and work on a solution.
