We try very hard to keep class cancellations to an absolute minimum so that our students have adequate time in the classroom. Whenever possible, please pre-arrange with your department chair and Dean far in advance (preferable prior to the start of term) if you need to cancel a class for any valid reason. Valid reasons include professional development opportunities, bereavement, or illness. Cancelling classes may result in proportionately lower pay.
If you wake up sick on the day of a class, please call the Division Admin (x4413) or Division Secretary (x4740) to let us know. It is important to actually speak with someone to ensure the message is received. We will post signs on your classroom doors. Please see information on using student’s Gmail accounts and on using Moodle to make it easier to communicate last-minute cancellations or other events to our students (many of whom commute to campus and would much appreciate not having to make the trip when class is cancelled).
Absences and Substitute Teaching
If you know in advance that you are going to be absent from a class you are scheduled to teach, you need to get approval from your Department Chair. You will also need to let the Division Admin know that you’re going to be absent through email and if necessary you will need to turn in a time sheet with to use sick leave for your absence. You and your Department Chair can discuss whether or not you need to find a substitute for the class, or if it would be more appropriate to assign work ahead of time in lieu of class attendance. If a substitute is necessary, your Department Chair can assist you in finding one. If you are going to be absent during an exam, you need to let the Dean’s office know so that an appropriate proctor can be found.
If you are sick or have an emergency and need to cancel class, you need to call either your Department Chair, or the Division Admin ASAP so they can let students know class is cancelled. You must speak to someone! Don’t just leave a message. If you use Moodle for your class, you can put out an assignment in your Moodle shell, or let either your Department Chair or Admin know to notify the students of an assignment in lieu of class. After your absence you will need to turn in a timesheet reflecting the hours you missed to the Division Admin.
