Why We Did It

The Entry Team was charged by the Progression Management Council to redesign the new student intake process to better allow students the one-on-one, individualized attention that leads to better major selections and stronger first term schedules. And thus the New Student Center was born.

What It Does

The New Student Center, located in the Hot Shot Café on the Albany campus during summer term, is designed to leverage human contact with friendly and welcoming staff to guide students into a good first term, answering their questions and preparing them to develop help-seeking behavior. After scheduling an appointment during the application process, each student arrives on campus and is greeted by a highly trained Student Ambassador who welcomes them and settles them in to wait for their session (there's even free coffee!). Once there's an available space, the new student works one-on-one with a First Term Enrollment Expert to plan an appropriate schedule that reflects their major, commitment to college, and first term scheduling best practices and then returns to the Student Ambassador for the actual registration process.
