May 4, 2020 Update
Students, families, friends, faculty and staff,
As you know, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our in-person commencement ceremony, originally scheduled for June 11th. Nevertheless, we are absolutely committed to celebrating the incredible achievements of our graduates. The Executive Team has spent the past few weeks evaluating alternatives that will honor our students, while also adhering to safety guidelines and the critical commitments of our teaching and support staff throughout the coming academic year.
As a result, we are announcing a two-part plan:
Next June, 2021, LBCC will celebrate the first combined commencement in its history – an in-person event that equally celebrates both the 2020 graduating class and the 2021 graduating class. Though this timeframe means that our 2020 grads must wait a year to take their symbolic walks across the stage, we want to give them that special moment of receiving a degree, turning their tassel, and hugging their friends, loved ones, and the LB staff who supported them every step of the way. This will not be an add-on to next year's commencement, but a new kind of event that equally celebrates two classes and their amazing accomplishments.
In addition, we will commemorate the achievements of the Class of 2020 this June with online recognition, a commemorative video, and other plans. This is not meant to be a virtual commencement but rather a placeholder until we can celebrate our grads in person.
It feels heartbreaking to have to alter commencement plans for our graduates. However, we can't lose sight of the fact that in just a few short weeks our students will have achieved their goals under the most extraordinary of circumstances—and they will be able to take the next step toward a bright future.
We are so proud of our students and of the entire LB staff who are dedicated to supporting their journeys.
With heartfelt sincerity,
The Executive Team
