Subject directories

  • InfoMine , Academic Info , and The Internet Public Library all provide links to resources of scholarly use that offer annotations or evaluations of sites. InfoMine privides links to thousands of Internet resources covering most disciplines. Academic Info is a directory of Internet resources tailored to a college audience. The Internet Public Library lists subject collections and provides access to reference sources such as The Columbia Encyclopedia.

  • The University of Kentucky WWW Subject Catalog provides links to sites by subject. It indexes Web resources by subject and is based at a non-profit educational institution with an excellent reputation.

  • The Lycos 50 Daily Report , and The Scout Report all bestow awards or sites of the month. At Lycos it is recommended to browse the award archives that are organized by topic.

  • Federal Web Locator and GPO Access are excellent sites to access government information. The Locator is searchable, well-organized, and comprehensive by branch or agency. Access to databases of the Government Printing Office is available with a good search interface with helpful options at GPO Access.

Books and library catalogs

  • The Library of Congress online catalog has good forms-based searching; can select database search from books, maps, online books, photos-manuscripts-movies available online, and other digitized materials not available online; can quickly do follow-up searching for works by same author, under same subject heading, etc.; buttons for easy navigating to item list [list of hits], new search, previous & next record, etc.

  • Bartleby, Gutenberg Project, National Academies Press , Internet Public Library and On-line Books Page all have free electronic texts.

  • Amazon is a huge bookshop on the Web, you can search by author, subject or title, read reviews written by other Amazon readers.

  • Two research guides at the OSU Valley Library site are helpful: the business research guide and the international business guide

    Please note that many businesses have pages on the net. There may be valuable information about the company, though sometimes the information provided may be biased in favor of the company. Sometimes businesses will include extra information beyond the scope of their products or services that may be appealing. This added information may be valuable, but sometimes it is just superficial data with no useful content. It may be a duplication or abridgement of information elsewhere on the net.
