Leondra Deffenbaugh, TRIO Student with a bright future. Leondra Deffenbaugh

Leondra's story: I am a first generation student that was brought up in a low income family. My family life growing up could be described as a 10, on a scale from 1-10, on the severly disfunctional scale. We didn't have much money and our housing situation was unstable and we moved around a lot, usually to a different town each time. Due to moving around all the time, I found it hard to fill in the gaps between where I left off at the old school and where I started at the new school, especially in the areas of mathematics and english. A lot of basic math I didn't learn until recently in college. Because I grew up in an unstructured environment, I had to struggle to learn how to organize my time and life to the demands of a college schedule. Since I am the oldest in my family, and the first to attend college, I haven't had anybody to ask for guidance along the way, when I was unsure or needed it. I had been researching TRIO organizations on the Internet before I learned that LBCC would be forming our own TRIO here at our school. I was directed to the TRIO Center, where I went through the screening process and was accepted into the program this year. Being a part of TRIO has given me a sense of belonging and something to strive for. The facility here has provided a foundation for which I plan to build on with their guidance and help with structuring my time, goals, and life. Some of the things besides support that TRIO has helped me with have been helping out with the cost of books by loaning me the math 20 book I needed for my math class. If I would have had to buy the book, it would have cost me over $100 - by loaning me the book for the whole term, they saved me that expense. I had said earlier that I didn't get much quality time in grade school to learn basic mathematics and TRIO has two math tutors who are in the TRIO Center just about any time of the day. The tutors spend quality time with me on a daily basis. I strongly recommend applying for the TRIO Program and promise it will be time well spent, if you are accepted into the program. There is nothing to lose, except what you might have gained if you don't apply!
