General Education Development (GED)

Linn-Benton Community College is an official testing center for the General Educational Development or GED.

What is the GED?
The GED provides a way to earn an equivalency certificate for individuals who have not graduated from high school. The GED certificate is widely accepted by employers, colleges and apprenticeship programs.

The GED is a series of five tests. The tests and time limits for each test are:

  1. Language Arts/Writing - 2 hours
  2. Social Studies - 1 hour, 10 minutes
  3. Science - 1 hour, 20 minutes
  4. Language Arts/Reading - 1 hour, 5 minutes
  5. Mathematics - 1 hour, 30 minutes

How much does the GED testing cost?
The GED testing fee is $90.00* (non-refundable) for all five tests.  This fee will be valid for three years. If you have not completed testing within the three year limit, you will have to pay the testing fee again.

If you began your GED at another Oregon GED Testing Center, and want to complete at LBCC, you will be charged $11.00 for each test you need to complete. If you began in another state, you will need to pay an additional $35.00 to cover the State of Oregon testing fee.
*Fees are subject to change without notice and are non-refundable.

Who is eligible to take the GED tests?
Adults, 18 years or older, who have not graduated from an accredited high school may test.

If you are 16 or 17, you must either provide proof that you are legally exempt from compulsory education, or are in an approved GED Option Program. Contact your school of residence for more information. If you are a home-schooled student, you should contact your local ESD office. Parent/Guardian signature is required.

No one under 16 is allowed to test for their GED.

How can I prepare for the GED tests?
Preparation classes are available at each of the LBCC centers: Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon and Sweet Home. Both day and evening classes are listed in the LBCC Schedule of Classes. The classes are helpful for any and all of the tests.  For more information call 541-917-4710.

If you choose to study on your own, there are study books available in libraries and bookstores.  For sample questions and more information about the GED tests, click on the following link:  http://www.acenet.edu/Content/NavigationMenu/ged/test/prep/sample_questions.htm

Preparation is not required but is recommended.  There is a $10 fee for each test that must be retaken.
