Physical Sciences
Majors and Programs | Instructors
Greetings,
On behalf of the Physical Sciences department, we'd like to welcome you to Linn-Benton Community College!
Our department offers programs in chemistry, food and fermentation science, general science (appropriate for pre-pharmacy and pre-education tracks), geology, and physics. You can find information about these programs in the 2011-2012 LBCC catalog on pages 82-85.
Students entering these programs with strong high school mathematics and science backgrounds can expect to complete these programs in two years. Students who must take pre-calculus courses should expect to spend more than two years completing the program. Once you are ready to take program level courses, you need to schedule a meeting with your advisor.
Students who have not completed MTH 251 upon entrance to LBCC should plan on completing additional math courses. The math courses you will need to take depend on your math placement test scores and may include:
- MTH 20 (4 cr), MTH 60 (4 cr), MTH 65 (4 cr), MTH 95 (4 cr), MTH 97 (4 cr), MTH 111 (5 cr), MTH 112 (5 cr);
If you did not complete high school chemistry with a grade of C or better, need a refresher, or have little or no background in chemistry you need to take the following:
- CH 150 Preparatory Chemistry (3 cr)
The department also recommends pre-program students complete the following:
- GS 104 Principles of Physical Science: Physics (4 cr)
(if student has not completed HS physics);
- GS 199 Speaker Series (1 cr) (orientation class for new majors to be taken your first term at LBCC)
Enroll in reading and writing courses that correspond to your placement test scores. You may also be interested in the following Fall term general education courses: Fall core class options
We hope this guide and the 2011-2012 LBCC catalog (p. 82-85) help you select courses for Fall term. Feel free to contact one of us over the summer with advising questions via email. We look forward to your success and completion of your degree!
College-wide Welcome Day is September 21, 2011. The Physical Sciences department will be meeting with majors that day. Check our department website later in the summer for specific times.
Sincerely,
