Peace Studies
Welcome to the LBCC Peace Studies Program
Recipient of the 2001 Martin Luther King Jr. Corvallis Citizen's Award
The Peace Studies Program is a student co-curricular activity at LBCC that offers interested students the opportunity to build awareness of non-violent approaches to conflict resolution on campus and in local communities. The highlight of the program for the past twelve years has been the biennial trip to Europe for 8-10 students to participate in peace education workshops. For each trip, students have done fundraising to support their travel and conference costs. The generous support by groups and individuals in the Linn-Benton community in combination with funding by LBCC student programs has ensured that all basic costs have been covered for each student.
This year the study focus is: American foreign policy and its response to terrorism.
The goals are:
- To understand the current conflict
- To examine the humanitarian implications of the strategy and tactics employed by the 'antiterrorism coalition'
- To investigate the roots of terror and violence within the present global status quo
- To consider the meaning and achievement of positive peace for the future.
