Safe Practices concerning SPAM and Viruses
Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC) deploys a multi-tiered approach to detect and eliminate computer viruses and SPAM before they reach college desktops. This software has been carefully 'tuned' to detect as much real SPAM and virus activity as possible without risking "False-positive" detection -- mistaking and deflecting appropriate, ligitimate email.
Reducing your risk of getting a virus infection on your computer
On college computers, open your "Symantec Client Security" program:
- Verify that the weekly "Virus Definition" file update has been received.
- Make sure "Auto-protect" is Enabled.
- Be very cautious and skeptical when downloading files or opening attachments.
On home computers:
- Install and run antivirus software.
- Configure it to check all incoming email and files (see User Guide or Help menu)
- Download new virus information at least once a week.
Reducing SPAM
Reducing SPAM in your email Inbox will require a 'multi-tiered' approach of your own.
You've already begun if you...
- Use GroupWise "Junk Mail" and "Block Mail" email filters
Also, be sure you...
- Don't give your email address out arbitrarily
- Check privacy policies
- Be aware of options selected by default
- Use filters
- Don't follow links in spam messages
- Disable the automatic downloading of graphics in HTML mail
- Consider opening an additional email account
- Don't spam other people
