Graduate Follow-Up
Following Our Graduates
LBCC conducts an annual mail/phone survey of prior academic year Transfer and Career Technical Education (CTE) graduates to learn about their employment and academic activities since graduating. We also ask how satisfied they are that the training and education they received while attending LBCC prepared them to compete with others in their field.
Additional questions about educational benefits from attending LBCC were asked of our 0809 and 0910 graduates. Here is an example of our survey conducted with our most recent set of graduates 0910 (1011 report year) - Graduate Follow-Up Survey of 0910 Grads (in 1011)
0910 Response Rate: 62% of CTE Grads and 67% of Transfer Grads. In previous years, response rates have ranged from 62% to 82%. Beginning with the 0809 grads, we also expanded our follow-up methodology to include: more comprehensive use of the National Student Clearinghouse service to investigate actuality of transfer graduate progress to 4-year institutions; and, an employment search in cooperation with the Oregon Employment Department to determine graduate employment status and wage levels.
How Our Graduates Are Doing
Over the years, including the feedback from our 0910 graduates, employment and educational outcomes for our graduates and their feedback has largely been positive.
- A majority of Career Technical Education (CTE) graduates find full-time or part-time employment within nine months of graduation – 78.8% for our 0910 grads, 70.3% with employment related to their degree.
- Vast majorities of CTE graduates are very satisfied with the education and training they have received to help them be competitive in their field - 87+% over the last ten years. However, while a majority are very satisfied (4 or 5 on a five point scale with 1 as “not at all,” 3 as “somewhat” and 5 as “very much”), we have seen this percentage begin to drop to 72.3% in 0809 and 65.5% in 0910. This result may be influenced by a tough economy and associated challenges of finding work. However, it will be important for programs to continue to work closely with their advisory groups and other representatives from business/industry to make certain they are training students to be competitive at the level of current workforce needs.
- A majority of our Transfer graduates continue on with their education within the following full academic year after their graduation – 79.8% for our 0910 grads. 93% of those continuing are still focused on the same or a major related to their LB degree. And, 98% of those continuing are at a 4-year college or university.
- Vast majorities of Transfer graduates are satisfied with the academic preparation they received - 95+% over the last ten years.
- Perceived educational benefits are substantial across the board. 0809 and 0910 graduates view LBCC as having more than "somewhat" provided education and training that has helped them in the following ways (4 or 5 on a five point scale with 3 being "somewhat"). Here are the results for the 0910 grads:
1) compete with others in their field – 65.5% CTE grads (down from 72.3% prior year)
2) be prepared for further education – 90.7% Transfer grads
3) get a more satisfying job – 75.0% CTE Employed, 70.4% for all CTE Grads – employed or not
4) earn a better wage – 60% for employed CTE grads (down from 69.3% the prior year)
5) develop a better understanding of career goals – 65.3% CTE (down from 69.7% the prior year), 71.7% Transfer (up from 66.6% the prior year)
6) understand their interests, abilities and values - 66.7% CTE, 72% Transfer
7) write more effectively in the workplace - 56.8% CTE, 73% Transfer
8) communicate more effectively for the workplace - 62.5% for CTE, 73.0% Transfer
9) solve math problems more effectively in the workplace - 55.7% CTE, 70.2% Transfer
10) interact more effectively with diversity in the workplace/field of study (people and perspectives) - 56.8% CTE, 66.4% Transfer
