Criminal Background Checks for Preschools

Starting fall term 2010, individuals enrolling in any of LBCC’s parent cooperative preschools (“Living & Learning with your Preschooler” classes) will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check before they are able to work in the preschool classroom/lab.

We have not had to do this before.  What is the reason for the change?
As you may or may not know, this is a new procedure for preschool class participants.  The reason for this change is that effective July 1, 2010 a new Oregon law was passed which requires preschools to be recorded with the Child Care Division (ORS657A.255 257).  The purpose of this statute is to ensure that most adults who have contact with children have completed a criminal background check, and to inform parents about the type of child care facility that they are using.

What will preschool parents have to do?
In order for LBCC to comply with this new law, we will need you to complete the following process:
1.  Each person who will be working in a preschool classroom/lab will need to complete a criminal background check prior to having contact with the children in that classroom.
2.  An enrolled second parent will also need to get their own individual background check if he/she will be participating in the preschool lab as well.
3.  Individuals needing a background check will need to complete the “Subject Information” section of the enclosed form and attach a $10.00 check or money order made payable to Linn-Benton Community College (please do not send cash through the mail).  Send your form and check to:

    Linn-Benton Community College
    ATTN: Parenting Education
    6500 Pacific Blvd SW
    Albany, Oregon 97321

4.  If you have already completed a criminal background check since July 1 of the most recent year for some other entity, you will not need to do a separate check for LBCC; however, we will require a copy of the completed check prior to the start of class.  If you are submitting such a copy, please send your documentation to the same name/address as in # 3, above.
5.  Class participants who have not successfully submitted their form and payment OR provided a suitable copy of an existing completed background check will NOT be able to work in their preschool’s classroom/lab; therefore, it is extremely important that we have all documentation in place and processed prior to the start of your first term each academic year.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Jerri Wolfe at 541-917-4891.
