Education Degrees

The Associate of Arts Degree (Oregon Transfer), Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees are available.

Associate of Arts Degree (Oregon Transfer)
This two-year degree allows for easy transfer to any public four-year university in Oregon. Students must earn a minimum of 90 credits; however, up to 108 credits can be transferred. Sixty-four of ninety credits are required general study courses. The remaining credits may be used as electives or to meet program requirements of a particular university. If you know which university you plan to attend, choose LBCC classes with that program in mind.

Most teacher preparation programs require math for teachers - MTH 211, MTH 212, and MTH 213. These courses meet general education requirements and may be completed at LBCC.

Each course is offered once per year. Consequently, you must be ready to take MTH 211 fall term of your second year. Be aware that you may have to complete prerequisites in math during your first year at LBCC based on your score on the CPT exam.

Several teacher preparation programs require classroom experience as part of the education requirements. You may meet this requirement by taking HDFS 225 Child Development fall term, HDFS 248 Learning Experiences With Children winter term, and ED 209A Theory and Practicum spring term.

You may also earn credit for working in a school classroom by enrolling in ED 101, ED 102, or ED 103. Because schools have health and safety requirements, you should meet with an advisor before enrolling in ED 101.

Associate of Science
The AS is designed for transfer to Oregon State University. LBCC's Child and Family Studies program is linked to OSU's Human Development and Family Studies degree (HDFS): Early Childhood option. OSU's HDFS prepares students for application to the Master of Arts in Teaching program and for entry into careers with young children and their families.

Students complete one year of general education requirements and one year of OSU's HDFS program requirements while enrolled at LBCC.

Career options include: early childhood education, elementary school teaching, or work in social service programs for children and families as case managers, parent educators, and family advocates.

Students interested in a degree in Liberal Studies at OSU, preparing for the Master of Arts in teaching, may also complete an AS degree at LBCC.

Associate of Applied Science
The two-year Associate of Applied Science degree is a program for students who plan to start to work after graduation in a child care center or in another setting with preschool children.

Graduates are trained to become lead teachers. Half of the classes meet the college's general education requirements. Half focus on specialized training to work with young children. Courses include: child development, family relationships, lesson planning, and practical experience in a preschool classroom.

Many classes are offered in late afternoons or evenings. Graduates who elect to continue their education at a four-year university can complete a transfer degree within two terms at LBCC. If they enroll in a university with the AAS, all of the coursework will count as program requirements or electives.
