LBCC offers all of the lower-division transfer courses that a potential transfer student in Animal Science needs. These courses provide the proper background for those wanting to further their educational goals. Valuable practical instruction assists students in meeting their objectives. Curriculum completion is the first step toward meeting lower-division requirements for students interested in pursuing a career in teaching.
Also available are lower-division transfer courses in a variety of agricultural areas that will provide practical background and experiences for anyone entering the field of education.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete an Associate of Science degree with an emphasis in Animal Science will:
- Effectively apply multiple species Animal Husbandry skills and concepts within the livestock industry and/or as a transfer student.
- Use skills acquired to gain employment in animal agriculture.
- Effectively research nutrition, management, marketing, health, and reproduction issues.
- Communicate effectively (written and oral) using industry specific vocabulary.
- Apply appropriate computational/accounting skills and utilize technology for successful money management and other record keeping requirements.
- Apply equine husbandry skills and concepts successfully as a transfer student.
- Research nutritional, basic management, marketing, health, reproduction and training issues in horses.
- Interact with professionals unique to the equine industry using appropriate vocabulary.
- Manage financial and record keeping operations using appropriate computational skills and technology.
These courses enable students to transfer to a four-year school, where they can complete their baccalaureate degree. For information on careers, plus the current employment outlook, access the Oregon Career Information System (CIS) located in the Career Center, Takena Hall 101.
Program Requirements
Students in this program will progress more quickly if they have a firm background in life sciences, physical sciences and math. Program completion requires math, chemistry and biology as well as courses in baccalaureate core perspectives. A cross-section of lower-division agriculture electives are available, providing practical instructional experiences in animal science, economics and crop production.
Facilities
Classes are conducted in modern classrooms and laboratories that have microcomputers, microscopes and other lab equipment for student use. Emphasis is placed on "hands on" experience, and many classes utilize the local livestock producers for in-the-field laboratory exercises.
Dual Enrollment at LBCC and Oregon State University
The LBCC-OSU Degree Partnership Program makes it possible for you to complete a single application process, be admitted to, and simultaneously enroll in courses at both institutions. The program is open to students in all transfer programs at LBCC and all undergraduate programs at OSU. Students in the program can combine the credit hours enrolled at both institutions to meet full-time enrollment status for financial aid purposes. The cost of services at the institution where you currently are enrolled is included in your tuition and enrollment fees; in addition, you can purchase services at the partner institution to use that institution's health services, cafeterias, recreation facilities, student housing, etc.

Cooperative Work Experience
Students enrolled in the Animal Science program can earn up to 14 hours of college credit for on-the-job training through LBCC's Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) program. Students interested in building CWE into their curriculum should discuss it with their major-area instructors and the CWE coordinator.
AS and AAOT Degrees
The Associate of Science (AS) and Associate of Arts (AAOT) are degrees for students planning to continue their education at the university level. The AS degree is designed to facilitate the transfer of LBCC coursework to nearby Oregon State University. If accepted at OSU, students with an AS will be admitted as having completed all lower-division general education requirements. The AAOT degree can lead to junior standing at any of the state universities in Oregon. In all cases, students should consult with their advisors at LBCC and make early contact with an advisor at the institution to which they plan to transfer.
