Common Questions

QUESTION:                       ANSWER/RESOLUTION:
What is the address for Blackboard at LBCC?

http://blackboard.linnbenton.edu ; please do not create an account until your instructor has told you how to access your class.

I have ideas and enhancement requests for future versions of Blackboard. Who can I share them with? Blackboard listens to its customers and uses their feedback to develop new editions of their product. If you have items that you would like to see, or tools you would like to see behave differently, email these to feedback@blackboard.com and please cc a copy to bbsupport@ml.linnbenton.edu
How do I use the Question Pool for creating and uploading many questions via a file, the way I did with InQsit?

This feature is not currently available to us at our licensed level of Blackboard. Questions must be entered through the Test Canvas, one at a time.

What is the HTML web code  I need to know to add bolds, italics and other formatting to my online text in the Blackboard editor?

Instructions and resources provided by Blackboard are available by clicking this link .

Starting Spring 2004, a WYSIWYG editor is now part of Blackboard and is available for both student and instructors using Internet Explorer on a PC. This editor allows you to add formatting without knowing HTML.

Other clients will still have access to the original editor which does require html "tags" to produce formatting.

I'm having trouble seeing pop-up boxes in testing areas or links that are supposed to open in new pages. Are you using pop-up software? If so, you should disable it during your session. If you have Windows XP, Service Pack 2 pop-up software may be in place without you even being aware - if so, you can disable the SP2 blocker by going to the Tools>Pop-up Blocker option on the IE menu bar and selecting "Turn off Pop-up Blocker".
I'm using a Macintosh and won't have access to a PC to work through my class.

If you desire to use the WYSIWYG editor, mentioned above, you will need to purchase  a product like Virtual PC to access this feature.

Using a Mac does not interfere with general operation or editing of the class sites.

How do I format my Powerpoint presentation files for distribution in Blackboard?

Your best options include:
1
. Attach and upload your PPT files directly to an item. Remember to include a link to the free Powerpoint viewer within your site for students who do not have the Powerpoint program available.

2. If you have Adobe Acrobat (the full program, not just reader)  then you may 'print' your slides as 6-slide per page handouts from powerpoint to Adobe Distiller (a component of Adobe Acrobat). 'Adobe Distiller' will show up as a printer option. Be sure that you have adjusted your setting to optimize your files for 'ebook' and have adjusted the files to use the least amount of colors and avoid colored backgrounds. Finally attach and upload to an item in any content area. (PREFERRED)

How do I get a photo to post with my staff profile?

You may scan and upload and photo in the format of jpg (preferred) or gif formats. Please keep the file size under 50k. You may contact the Media department (541-917-4672) to have a digital snapshot taken.

How much space do I have available on my class site for attachments, content, etc. ? Each class site is given 200 megabytes of storage space. You will receive a warning when you have filled 100 megabytes. Each uploaded item must be smaller than 20 megabytes. (Please remember all of these when considering uploading PPT PowerPoint files to your class - pdf handout-style alternatives work better)
Why does the email 'All Groups' function not work? This is a documented problem that is unresolved by Blackboard at this time. Solution: email 'Select Groups' one at a time.
I'm using 'letter' or 'Text' grade types in my gradebook but students tell me they see a '0' on their own gradesheet. This is a documented problem that is unresolved by Blackboard at this time. Solution: Use another grade type until resolution.
What version of Blackboard are we using? The version changes often as mini-updates are released; please check the bottom of the Blackboard login page at http://blackboard.linnbenton.edu for the current release information.
The font size of the text in Blackboard is much too small. How do I fix this? You can override Internet Explorer's text size by going to 'View' menu' and then adjust 'Text Size'; other browsers have similar options. Consult your browser's "help" menu.

I'm having problems with tests or quizzess not allowing me to continue to the next question.

Please verify that you have turned off any pop-up software you might have running. If you continue to have problems contact support at bbsupport@ml.linnbenton.edu .
When a document in the Blackboard Learning System is opened it appears within the browser, rather that in its native application, such as Microsoft Word.

How do I setup guest access to my site? There are three settings to be turned on in order for guest access to be enabled for your course site:
1) guest access needs to be turned on at the course
level (Course Control Panel > Settings > Guest
Access)
2) the content area in question needs to be set to allow guest
access (Course Control Panel > Manage Course Menu >
Modify for the area in question)
3) Each "content" tool needs to be set to allow guest access
(Course Control Panel > Manage Tools > Enable
Blackboard Tools)
Tell me more about the Digital Dropbox...

The Digital Drop Box is a tool that the Instructor and Students can use to exchange files. The Digital Drop Box works by uploading a file from a disk or a computer to a depository. Files can be sent back and forth from the Instructor.s Drop Box to the Drop Box of other users in the course.

Individual Student access to the Drop Box is available from the Digital Drop Box area located in the Course menu on the course Web site. Instructors must access their Drop Box from the Course Control Panel.

Note: The Digital Drop Box is used to exchange materials between individual Students and the Instructor. Information that needs to be posted for all Students should be placed in a Course Content Area.

Files may be added to the Digital Drop Box page by accessing the Digital Drop Box: Add File page. The fields on the page will only change the Information about the file, editing the actual file must be done through the application used to create the file.

Adding a file to the Digital Drop Box does not send it to any users. This must be done from the Digital Drop Box: Send File page. Also, the Digital Drop Box does not display the name of the person that Adds a file. When the file is sent, the sender's name is attached to the item. Therefore, in courses with more than one Instructor, it may be helpful to append the name of files Added to the Digital Drop Box with the initials of the person Adding the file.

Whenever I log on to Blackboard, I get this message:

There was a problem with this login request. Contact the system administrator.

I then log in a second time, and it works fine.   Any idea why it does this?
If you have bookmarked the login page instead of the main Blackboard entry page atblackboard.linnbenton.edu then you will be required to enter this information twice. This may be resolved by updating your bookmark.
