Desktop Publishing Workshops
Digital technology has revolutionized the world of print communication, and LBCC has responded by offering our Desktop Publishing Workshops on both PC and Macintosh computers. Now you can learn many of the major desktop publishing software applications on the computer platform of your choice simply by selecting the corresponding CRN number for that platform when registering.

Most workshops are taught in the evenings beginning promptly at 6 p.m. and lasting until 9 or 10 p.m., depending on the workshop. You must register by the day of the class. Prices are as follows:
4-hour workshop - $55
6-hour workshop - $83
12-hour workshop - $165

Each student works on an individual Macintosh or PC computer. Students are always able to view the instructor's monitor, which is projected on a large screen in the front of the classroom. The workshops provide specific information and detailed how-to instructions that focus on the essentials. Students leave with a wealth of solid information they can put to use when they return to their own computers.

Workshop instructors are professionals in the field of graphic design and digital prepress. The completed project accomplished by each student during the workshop is on a disk that the student keeps for further refinement and practice at home.

Photoshop® CS (4 hours each level)
Photoshop is the industry-standard, pixel-based editing program that allows desktop publishers/designers to create artwork, enhance photographs, apply special filters, remove or insert backgrounds, blend images, and precisely adjust output.
- Level 1: Selection tools and quick masking • Foreground and background • Manipulating selections and alpha channels • Drawing tools • Understanding color models • Pixels, dots and lines. Tuesday, September 29. CRN 20690 for Mac; CRN 20691 for PC.
- Level 2: Image repair • More selection techniques • Colorizing • Tone correction • Compositing images • Creating masks • Understanding image resolution. Prerequisite: Level 1 or its equivalent. Thursday, October 1. CRN 20692 for Mac; CRN 20693 for PC.
- Level 3: Using the pen tool • Filling and stroking paths • Creating clipping paths • Making color-based selections • Using indexed color • Creating duotones. Prerequisite: Level 2 or equivalent. Tuesday, October 6. CRN 20694 for Mac; CRN 20695 for PC.
- Level 4: Creating textures, landscapes and other special effects. Prerequisite: Level 3 or its equivalent. Thursday, October 8. CRN 20688 for Mac; CRN 20689 for PC.
InDesign CS (6 hours)
InDesign is Adobe’s latest page layout program. It has many new cutting edge features which will be explored in this introductory class. Along with the new features we will be going over tools, document creation, placing text and graphics, text wraps, creating PDFs, printing and more. Tuesday, December 1 and Thursday, December 3. Web Site Building Basics (12 hours)
Learn the fundamentals of Web development using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets. You will learn how to design a basic Web site from start to finish. You will construct tables and use images to add style to your pages. You will also be introduced to the basics of Macromedia Dreamweaver and common FTP software. Intermediate Web Design (12 hours)
Enhance your Web development skills using scripts, animated images, forms, frames and an improved knowledge of Cascading Style Sheets. You will also learn some of the more advanced functions of Macromedia Dreamweaver. Monday, October 26; Wednesday, October 28; Monday, November 2; and Wednesday, November 4. Introduction to Digital Photo I, II and III (6 hours)
Learn how to select a digital camera, set up the menus, and download images. Gain basic editing skills to produce a high quality photographic print. Each section will have a mix of lecture and hands-on activity. Important concepts of these classes include: How a digital camera works, the importance of white balance, the different ways one can transfer digital images to the computer, the best formats for working with digital images, the requirements for producing a high quality digital print.
- Level 1: Getting to Know Your Camera. Learn to download your photos from your camera to computer, store them safely, and do basic editing. Tuesday, November 3 and Thursday, November 5. CRN 23296 for Mac; CRN 23297 for PC.
- Level 2: Field Work and Ways of Seeing Photographically. Hone your ability to shoot with confidence by paying attention to detail prior to, during, and after the shoot. Learn more advanced editing. Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 12. CRN 23298 for Mac; CRN 23299 for PC.
- Level 3: Fine Art Printing. Learn to prep images for printing, set up the digital printer, and produce a print by selecting the right paper and ink combination to achieve the best print longevity. Tuesday, November 17 and Thursday, November 19. CRN 23300 for Mac; CRN 23301 for PC.
