Past Events:

Winter 2012
Jan. 6 - Coffin Butte Public Landfill Tour

Green club members Jenna Sukle, James Smith and Kathy Wilson toured the Coffin Butte Landfill and Process Recovery Center located north of Corvallis off highway 99. The group learned about how landfills are built, how garbage is processed, and how the methane created from the breakdown of garbage is captured and turned into energy that supplys approximately 5,000 houses. Members also toured the Process Recovery Center, where leaves, branches, wood and food waste are processed into soil that is then sold as compost.

Coffin Butte Landfill 3  Coffin Butte Landfill 4

The Process Recovery Center (left) processes yard and food waste along with wood scraps to make soil that is then sold as compost. Club members also toured the energy production center (right), where large diesel engines convert methane from the landfill into usable energy that is fed into the energy grid.
