English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

What is ESOL?

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department provides instruction for students with a wide range of English language proficiency.  There are multi-skill, non-credit classes for beginning through advanced levels. and there are also credit college preparatory courses, after which students can continue on with their college classes.

LBCC’s ESOL classes serve the English language learning needs of adult refugees, immigrants, permanent residents, U.S. citizens, professional personnel working or training in the U.S., international students, and international visitors.

Why Students Take ESOL Classes

All ESOL students are working to achieve various personal goals, such as learning enough English to meet daily communication needs, conducting business, preparing for college classes, getting involved in their children's education and interacting in their community. Most ESOL students also have work- or education-related goals, such as GED or high school completion, professional or technical training, professional development, or continuation of college studies within an English-speaking medium.

ESOL Credit Courses Fall 2012

Those individuals who have education-related goals, such as professional or technical training, professional development, or continuation of college studies will benefit from our new credit courses.  They are designed for English language learners (ELLs) and are taught by TESOL professionals within LBCC’s ESOL department.  They will prepare students for success in transfer-level courses and technical education programs.

The following is a brief description of the credit courses offered Spring 2012.  Please check LBCC’s online Schedule of Classes or click on Spring 2012 for more extensive descriptions, prerequisites, location, and placement information.

ENL090W, The Write Course for ELLs: Introduces non-native speakers of English to the writing process and academic writing in English.  The focus is on writing effective sentences, basic paragraph writing, and reviewing English grammar. Students who successfully complete this course will be ready for ENL090W.
ENL095W, College Writing Fundamentals for ELLs:  Develop skills in writing essays and transition from writing about personal topics to more academic themes.  Students who successfully complete this course will be ready for ENL115W.
ENL115W, Introduction to College Writing for ELLS: Develop your academic writing skills.  Students who successfully complete this course will be ready for WR 121 English Composition.
ENL090R, Strategies for Effective Reading for ELLs:  Increase your vocabulary and learn to use strategies for reading more effectively.  Students who successfully complete this course will be ready for ENL115R.

Steps for Registering for Credit Classes:

1.  Before registering for Reading and Writing credit classes, a College Placement Test (CPT) for Reading and Writing, and a writing sample, must be completed. To make an appointment at any LBCC campus, go to http://www.linnbenton.edu/go/student-assessment .   For those not taking more than 11 credits and not applying for admission, the cost is $5.00 per subject test.  For residents applying for admission, the cost of the CPT is covered by the $30 application fee, which must be paid before the test is taken.  For international students, the cost of the CPT is covered by the $100 application fee, which must be paid before the test is taken.

2.  Meet with Counselor Jan Fraser–Hevlin at Benton Center, or on the Albany campus in Takena Hall, to determine which classes to register for.  Jan’s phone number is  541-917-4780.  Her email is fraserj@linnbenton.edu  The tuition for the credit courses depends on whether a student is a resident or an international student.  Please see http://www.linnbenton.edu/go/tuitionandfees for more information.

3.  For help with the LBCC application, questions about the CPT, or filling out a financial aid application (FAFSA), students can contact Jan Fraser-Hevlin or another counselor.

ESOL Non-Credit Classes / Spring 2012

These non-credit classes are for English language learners who are working to achieve various personal goals, such as learning enough English to meet daily communication needs, conducting business, getting involved in their children’s education and interacting in their community. Most ESOL students also have work or education-related goals.  Adult learners can take non-credit classes until they are ready for the credit courses.

Non-Credit classes consist of Level A, B, or C multi-skill classes: Students develop English communication skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Each class includes lower and higher level students. For example, Level A includes low Beginning, Beginning and high Beginning students.

Steps for Registering for Non-Credit Classes:

1.  Attend one two-session Orientation and take a placement test.  (If a student completed this process fall 2011, or is currently attending a non-credit ESOL class, it’s not necessary to attend orientation again this spring.)  The orientation times, dates and locations are online at http://www.linnbenton.edu/go/esol/orientations-and-classes and on ESOL program flyers near the registration desks on LBCC campuses.

2.  Register for classes before the end of the second week of the term.  There is a $30 enrollment fee per term per student that allows students to take as many non-credit ESOL classes at their level on both campuses.
