Linn-Benton Roadrunner Volleyball
2010 Preseason wrap-up

The Linn-Benton Volleyball team ended a busy pre-season scheule at home against Multnomah University on Tuesday night (Sept. 21st) winning in three sets. The win gives the Roadrunners a 14-8 overall non-league record as they begin regional play on Friday, September 24th at Chemeketa Community College at 7:00pm.

The pre-season schedule included trips to Northern California, Spokane and Bellevue, WA.  The Roadrunners played several teams from the California conference as well as opponents in the other three regions of the NWAACC conference. Current standings in the southern region of the NWAACC conference have Mt.Hood in first place and Linn-Benton second.

The LBCC roster has already been put to the test this season. Two freshman recruits had opportunities to play at another level, leaving the squad shorthanded. Two sophomore injuries in August again left the team with fewer options.  However, the team of seven sophomores, three freshman and two redshirts continue to adapt and pull out some convincing wins against teams from all over the Northwest.

“This group of student-athletes is very resilient and is quite determined to excel no matter the circumstances.  We have had to use different line-ups every match and continue to experiment with varying offenses,” said Coach Jayme Frazier.  “This is the same group of student-athletes that excelled in the classroom last year and was the recipient of the AVCA All-American Academic Award.  They just seem to find a way to get the job done.  It says a great deal about their character on and off the court.”

Season highlights to date include Sophomores Emily Buchheit and Amanda Berry each receiving Southern Region Player of the week.  Amanda Berry was chosen as week three NWAACC defensive player.  Sophomores Tamiko Perry and Ellen Calderon were both chosen as tournament all-stars at the Bellevue cross-over last week.

Southern Region play begins on Friday September 24.  The 2010 roster, schedule, results and stats can be found at www.nwaacc.org.

Linn Benton Community College Women’s Volleyball team earns AVCA All-Academic Honors in the 2009-2010 academic year.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association award is presented to those teams across the nation who earn a 3.0 grade point average or better for the year. Only those players who played in any match could be counted toward the final grade point average. The Roadrunner volleyball team earned a 3.1 over three terms with 11 varsity players contributing to the gpa.

This year we had an exceptional group of student-athletes. Two of the three sophomores graduated with an Associates degree this year and immediately transferred to begin at four year universities. The group of eight freshmen remained diligent and disciplined all throughout the year. Seven of those eight freshmen will return to the court for the 2010 season.

The AVCA award is very difficult to receive. Only eight (two year college teams) earned the honor this year. Linn Benton was the only NWAACC volleyball team and the only Two-year West Coast team to receive the AVCA award. The academic honor was set up in 1992-93 and awarded to men’s and women’s high school and college teams around the nation. It is an exceptional honor.

The members of the 2009-2010 team are sophomores: Luci DeLong, Stephanie Mugleston and Megan Swanson and freshman : Amanda Berry, Emily Buchheit, Ellen Calderon, Kristina Crivello, Mackenzie Gundlach, McKenzie Mumpower, Tamiko Perry, Amy Trower. The Roadrunners are coached by head coach Jayme Frazier and assistants Jeff White and BriAnne Laverty.
