Lane vs. LBCC
The Linn-Benton Roadrunners played their first league game Saturday against rival Lane Communtiy College at LBCC. LBCC earned a split with the men winning their game against Lane and the women getting their first league loss.
With only a week of preparation the women’s team had the hardest night. Having to start their first league game with several players out, Lane proved to be a difficult team and won the game with a final score of 80-42.
The height of Lane’s players was hard forLBCC to overcome with six shots blocked by Lane. “We didn’t do the little things,” said Teresa Guerra, head coach of Roadrunners. “We’re definitely in one of the toughest leagues with Umpqua, Clackamas and Lane, and they’re all ranked in the top eight and we definitely want to be in one of those positions before NWAACC’s [Championships Tournament.”
Top players for the women were freshmen point guard Sam Sanders who lead the game for 3-pointers with 3, and top scorer for LB with 15 points. Also one of two sophomores on the team, Kalah Heacock tied Sanders for rebounds with 5 and was 100 percent on her free throws going 6 for 6.UCC vs. LBCC
The Lady Roadrunners showed up dressed in pink t-shirts to promote breast cancer awareness Saturday when they played against the Umpqua Community College Riverhawks. LB came away with a loss against UCC 78-56.
The first half LB had strong hustle and good team communication, but landingshots was key in first half. Lb scored 11 of 33 field goals but was zero of 7 attempted 3-point shots. UCC scored 14 of 27 field goals and 4 of 7 3-pointers in the first. Lb did make 11 free throws to UCC’s 6 with both teams having 13 attempts. Finishing the first half with UCC ahead 38-33.
Lb has yet to put together two periods and let UCC run away with the second half. All but one of UCC’s starters scored over 12 points in the games entirety but LB did show who was better at free throws making a total of 20 of 24, toUCC’s 10 of 24.
This game was starting point guard Sam Sander’s fourth game back after an ankle injury, and feels her team is still stuck in a hole. “We competed in the first half but once we get in a hole we can't dig ourselves back out of it.” Said Sanders who was clearly frustrated at the games end result.
“We are such a young team and I think everyone is still trying to adjust, but its good to have extra players for practice.” And “We have four games left, all I want is them to put 40 minutes together, all season long we’ve been able to play one 20 minute half but not the full 40.” Said head coach Teresa Guerra.
CHCC vs. LBCC
The Lady Roadrunners are still searching for their first league win as they were defeated by Chemeketa CC 65-55 Saturday. The first half of the women’s game started out looking as if LBCC would have some work to do as Chemeketa brought to the court a fast, aggressive style that had LBCC scrambling to keep pace.
As the first half was within its final minutes, however, LBCC picked up the pace and found themselves ahead of Chemeketa, exchanging the lead four times before the half’s end. Numerous times Chemeketa would double up on whoever had possession, leaving LBCC open every time, allowing them to take advantage of valuable scoring opportunities.
The end of the first half Chemeketa was ahead again, this time by 29-27. During the opening minutes of the second half the scores were kept close, but foul trouble for Kiana Saluni and a tired team from starters having to play the full 40 minutes allowed for Chemeketa to pull away and extend their lead by 10 points before the game’s end.
Sophomore guard Jamie Wilson scored 13 points for the game with 5 of 9 field-goals and 3 of 4 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Jamie Mayhew scored the most out of both teams with 4 of 4 free-throws and 6 of 20 field-goals for 16 points. “We’re lacking the chemistry right now, but sooner or later it will get better,” Mayhew said.
“It’s been a weird season with injuries, and getting new players halfway through the season is something I would never do, but thanks to players out permanently with injuries we had to,” said LBCC head coach Teresa Guerra.
PCC vs. LBCC
The Women’s team was victorious Wednesday when they beat PCC 74-58. The first half had left LB down 34-33. PCC had 12 of 33 field goals, 3 of 6 3-pointers and 7 of 12 free throws. While LB had 9 of 28 field goals, 1 of 4 3-pointers, and 14 of 19 free throws.
LB’s defense was drastically increased for the second half. Shutting downPCC scoring threats and scoring 41 points in the second half to PCC’s 24 points. Guard Jamie Mayhew scored the most points of the game with 27 points. Mayhew had 6 of 12 field goals and was 15 out of 17 on her free throws. Guard Kalah Heacock scored 17 points with 5 of 10 field goals and 7 of 8 free throws. After the game Heacock said her team is getting better and team chemistry is starting to come together.
