Majors and Programs | Instructors
College guidelines and English Department experiences suggest the following elements:General course information:
- Name of course, course number, and section number
- CRN number and number of credits,
- scheduled time/days (including lab hours), and classroom number
- Name of instructor
Instructor contact information:
- Phone number and e-mail address
- Office location and office hours (note: part-time office hours may be 'by appointment')
- College phone number (voice mail)
- Mailbox location or drop-off site for assignments/messages
- Personal statement (biography, philosophy)
Course description:
- Prerequisite(s) and/or co-requisite(s) *
- Anticipated goals, objectives, and/or outcomes *
* Information in these sections needs to be consistent with what is printed in the current college catalog and the course outline
- Overview of class
- Overview of teaching methods (lecture, discussion, lab, field trips, rehearsals, etc.)
- Summary of learning objectives (In the English Department, these are established on the course outlines).
- Methods of evaluation (type and number of tests, papers, discussion, participation points, etc.)
Grading practices and criteria for grades - A statement about your policies for "incomplete" and "y" grades (also found in LBCC's Class Schedule for each term). Example:
| INCOMPLETE or 'Y' GRADES: You may qualify for an Instructor's withdrawal or 'Y' grade IF you have completed less than 25% of class work. You may be eligible for an 'Incomplete' grade IF you have finished 75% of class work. If you have an 'Incomplete,' all courseowrk must be finished by the end of the next term, and your instructor can only award an 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' or 'F' grade. In other words, you cannot have an 'IN' grade changed to a 'Y' grade. Please contact your instructor before the end of the term if you need either of these options.

- Wait List Policy. Sample:
| WAITLIST POLICY: If our class is full, registered students not attending class during the first week will be withdrawn, and waitlisted students who are attending class will be admitted to the class on a space available basis.

- Make-up test policy and any special testing requirements
- Attendance policy
- Term calendar (due dates, approximate test dates, dates that class doesn't meet)
- Plagiarism statement. Sample:
| ABOUT PLAGIARISM. Using someone else's work as your own or using information or ideas without proper citations (which is called plagiarism) can lead to your failing the assignment or the class. NOTE: Bibliographies (called 'Works Cited' in MLA) AND in-text citations (Fiero 27) are required whenever you use outside sources, including Internet sources.

Course materials:
- Textbook and/or other required materials (notebooks, lab materials, etc.)
- Each item identified as 'recommended' or 'required'
- Note on how and where students acquire materials and when they should be brought to class
- Fees for in-class materials or required testing
Relevant campus resources:
- Special labs, supplemental instruction options
- Learning Center services (tutoring, math assistance, Writing Desk, minicourses, etc.)
- Library, Forum Computer lab, Career Center, counseling, and other course-specific resources and location
- Disability Statements
English faculty also suggest putting the word PROPOSED by the class schedule as this alerts students that changes may occur. Finally, in your assignment section, listing the total number of words or pages can be helpful for students and for you.
