The Arts & Communication Division at LBCC provides a substantial number of the core classes which make up the General Education requirements for the college's various degrees. We also help students develop skills which will lead them toward lifetime employability. We provide students with a learning environment which prepares them to be flexible, creative, life-long learners with a sense of self-confidence about an unknown future.

Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor, made the following suggestions for skills of an educated workforce in the 21st Century. Classes in the Arts & Communication Division help students develop these necessary skills.

  • Abstraction - the ability to order and make meaning of the massive flow of information.
  • System Thinking - the ability to see parts in relation to the whole for problem solving
  • Experimental Inquiry - the ability to set up procedures for testing and evaluating alternative ideas.
  • Collaboration - active communication to get a variety of perspectives and the ability to create consensus when necessary.
