Families use many different sources to locate child care. Family, friends, and neighbors may offer suggestions; local schools and churches may be aware of providers in their area. Family Connections has a comprehensive database of child care and education settings in Linn and Benton counties, including preschools, family and center child care, after-school programs, Head Start, and other community resources.

Experienced, caring staff at Family Connections can do personalized referrals, tailored to a family’s needs. Each family receives a consultation with staff to answer their questions about:

  • kinds of care are available and the benefits and limits of each
  • child care regulation and how it affects quality of care
  • questions to ask and things to look for in care settings for all age groups
  • what a family can expect from a child care provider, and what will be expected of the family
  • appropriate activities for different age groups of children
  • rates that child care providers in this area charge
  • community resources available for families

Families looking for care will want to do some thinking about what they need in a care situation:

  • What hours and days of the week will you need care?
  • Does your child have special needs that a caregiver/teacher needs to know about?
  • Is transportation a barrier?
  • Does the care need to be located near a particular school?
  • What kinds of activities do you want for your child?
  • What can you afford to pay for care?

Family Connections offers comprehensive child care consultations including referrals and information, access to subsidies to help pay for child care, information about community activities and classes for children, parent education, and support groups for families.
