Each class earns three LBCC credits. Term information under course title indicates when a class is typically held.
Please note: you may start classes anywhere in the sequence and take them in any order you wish.


»Year 1

Introduction to School Libraries, course ED7.740
♦ Fall term

Presents an overview of the field of librarianship including school, public, academic and special libraries. Includes the roles and activities of the library assistant, basic library procedures, materials and services. Covers the content and format of information. Includes field experiences.

Circulation of Library Materials, course ED7.741
♦ Fall term

Covers the principles and practices of library circulation including procedures for checkout and return of materials. Includes processing and shelving of library materials. Covers copyright procedures and issues. Field experiences.

Collection Development, course ED7.743
♦ Winter term

Presents an overview of the principles and approaches of building and maintaining the library collection. Includes identifying user needs, developing policies, selection of materials, and weeding of the collection. Covers censorship and intellectual freedom practices. Includes field experiences.

Children's Literature and Reading Promotion, course ED7.746
♦ Winter term

Presents an introduction to literature for children and young adults. Includes fiction and nonfiction ranging from picture books to chapter books in a variety of genre, formats, reading levels and interests. Includes field experiences.

Reference Materials and Services, course ED7.742
♦ Spring term

Introduction to using print and electronic reference materials to provide information services to library users. Includes information literacy skills, developing search strategies, and providing access to resources. Includes field experiences.

Organization of Library Materials, course ED7.744
♦ Spring term

An introduction to classification and cataloging practices and procedures in the library. Includes the Dewey Decimal System, subject headings, MARC records and library vendors. Includes field experiences.

Online Information Literacy for Librarians, course ED7.745
♦ Fall term

An introduction to using electronic resources in searching for information. Includes information literacy approaches to locating information for students and library patrons.

Multicultural Literature K-12, course ED7.747
♦ Fall term

An introduction to children's and young adult literature that respectfully depicts the range of cultures in the United States. Includes the selection, evaluation, and promotion of multicultural literature in library and classroom.

Library Skill Curriculum, course ED7.748
♦ Winter term

An overview of the educational mission of K-12 instruction, library skills instruction and strategies to support classroom educational activities.

Global Literature K-12, course ED7.749
♦ Winter term

An introduction to children's and young adult literature, fiction and non-fiction, set in countries around the world. Both contemporary and historical literature for use at the elementary and secondary school levels.

Reading Promotion/Readers Advisory, course ED7.751
♦ Spring term

An overview of approaches, activities and techniques for providing readers advisory services and promoting reading in school and public libraries.

Design & Production of Library Resources, course ED7.752
♦ Spring term

An overview of the design of the library and the use of library materials to respond to patron needs and interests. Includes the use of library space, signage, and visual communication of resources. Covers the creation and maintenance of print and electronic library and instructional materials.
